Portugal - Odemira (Alentejo)

Opening its way through hills and valleys to the ocean, the river Mira describes at a certain point a singular deviation. This was the place chosen by Roman and Arabic people to settle down. From the water, Odemira borrows its name and its importance along the centuries.

To Odemira was conceded the official charter in 1256 by the king D. Alfonso III. The village has expanded along the mountain slops with its beautiful white houses ornamented with colourful flowers.

Throughout the centuries, long before the bridge over river Mira has been built, the river crossing had to be secure by dinghy, called the "Barca".
