Thailand - Ko Muk

In transit from Ko Ngai (Ko Hai) to Ko Muk a stop is maide to visit the Emerald Cave of Tham Morakot. At high tide you need to swin through a dark tunnel to reach a concealed sandy beach. Here there is a volcano like chimney, which floods the beach with sunny daylight.

Ko Muk is an island dominated by inland rubber plantations, but has many nice beaches and good value accommodation. You arrive at the main resort beach of Hat Farang and from there are four or five bungalow complexes to choose from. Our choice was the Rubber Tree Plantation (cheaper than the beach front complexes)where the reception was welcoming and genuinely warm hearted. One of the staff (Sak Dar) took great plesure in taking us under his wing, teaching us some basic thai words and enjoing an end of shift beer with us. From here it is a short walk back down to the beach, but is right on the doorstep of the forest plantations. There is a dirt track leading from the forest towards the fishing village based on the far side of the island. Along here you can see the harvested rubber which is pressed and left to dry before beeing sent to the mainland. Past the fishing village is a long sandy peninsular which has a fancy bungalow resort for those with a healthy bank balance.

Local wildlife is abundant and can surprise you at any moment.
